EU summit makes fresh restart for the retention of flight passenger data
After the defeat of European passenger data retention iniative in the EU Parliament in April 2013, the EU Commissioner had said with a strange understanding of democracy, he wouldbring this to vote until this iniative is accepted. Now it gets serious.
Already last year, the EU had paid money for the construction of the necessary technology in various countries. At the EU summit last week, the EU Member States have asked the Council for a new European PNR data collection initiative and the European Parliament will have to decide about PNR (Passenger Name Record) again.
The current reasons is now fighting "foreign fighters" who are now being trained in Syria or Iraq in Islamist groups and "soon will return to us." Their "influx" should therefore be curbed.
We need to be active again! This week, the European Parliament is already addressing for the first time a review of the PNR agreement with Australia.
We have to write again to the (now new) EU Parliament Members! Our arguments from 2012 are still valid. In addition, more recently, that national and European police authorities would like to have access to this data.
