Thursday, 04 April 2019, 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. aquarium (Südblock), Skalitzer Str. 6, 10999 Berlin Borderline-europe – Menschenrechte ohne Grenzen e.V. and the European Citizen Initiative „We are a welcomingEurope“ cordially invite you to a panel discussion on the European dimension of criminalization of solidarity. Guests: Anouk van Gestel is a Belgian news editor in chief. She was accused of human smuggling after she offered shelter to Mohamed, a 17 year old Sudanese. Helena Maleno is a Spanish human rights defender and has operated by fielding distress calls from people crossing from North Africa. She has been investigated by Moroccan and Spanish authorities for colluding with people tra ckers and helping to facilitate illegal immigration. Kathrin Schmidt is a German activist and was a crew member of the civil rescue ship „Iuventa“. Along with 9 other crew members, she is currently being investigated by Italian authorities for aiding people traffickers and helping to facilitate illegal immigration facing up to 20 years in prison. Sara Mardini and Séan Binder are Syrian and Irish-German students who have volunteered on the Greek island of Lesbos before getting arrested and being accused of human trafficking among other charges by Greek authorities. Carmine Conte is a legal policy analyst at the Brussels-based Migration Policy Group and a research member of Research Social Platform on Migration and Asylum (ReSOMA). He currently works on a European-wide observatory of cases of criminalization. Moderated by: Christian Jakob, journalist (taz), co-author of „Europa macht dicht.
