Facial Recognition and E-Border Management

As an organisation working in the Fundamental Rights Agency (FRP) of the EU, we report on their publications when they concern our issues. In the current report we find two important things:

Facial recognition and fundamental rights

FRA presented the main findings from its facial recognition technology paper during an event organised by the International Network of Civil Liberties Organizations (INCLO). The network brings together 15 independent, national human rights NGOs from different countries.

The online event showcased the launch of their new publication, compiling stories showing how the use of facial recognition technology impacts the rights and everyday lives of people across 13 countries in the Americas, Africa, Europe, Asia and Australia. The launch event took place on 28 January, to mark International Data Privacy and Protection Day. FRA’s presentation provided the broader European context of the fundamental rights implications of using such technology. Surveillance and privacy experts from INCLO member organizations shared perspectives from Canada, India, Israel, the US, and South Africa.

Fundamental rights in the Entry- Exit system

FRA outlined fundamental rights safeguards in the Entry-Exit system during a training course on 2 and 3 February. FRA rose awareness on the potential risks for fundamental rights, that can emerge if safeguards are not duly implemented, drawing on its relevant work. This was the third online training course for national authorities organised by European Board and Coast Guard (Frontex).

The Entry-Exit system - a large scale IT database - will start operating in 2022. It will record and process the personal data of non-EU nationals travelling to the EU for a short stay. These can be either visa holders or visa exempt travellers. The course gathered authorities that are involved in the set-up of the system.
