Julian Assange may not be extradited to the USA

A first success: the Belmarsh Special Court in London has ruled that the UK may not extradite Wikiealks founder Julian Assange to the US. The prison conditions in the USA and the size of the expected sentence prohibit extradition there. Of course, the lawyers from the USA have already announced an appeal against the verdict.

What is also important about the verdict is the stipulation that Julian Assange's detention is to be terminated with immediate effect. The further proceedings can still drag on indefinitely. With the appeal by the representatives of the U.S. government, the proceedings surrounding his deportation will eventually end up before the British Supreme Court, after which it may ultimately be decided by the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.

In any case, the protests and petitions against the proceedings, which have now lasted for years, have had an effect. We can be proud of that. It is to be condemned that the court did not speak out in favor of human rights and free journalism in the case. The court did not dare to criticize the human rights violations of the US.

I believe there are things the govt needs to be able to keep secret. Freedom of speech and of the press defined in the constitution as interpreted by the Supreme Court are not absolutes that mean anyone may access and publish our nuclear launch codes and the location of all of our submarines. Some things obviously need to be secret and some things obviously do not. Many things fall in between those extremes. Who decides the dividing line is a tough question. What is very obvious is that Julian Assange is not that person.
You or I asserting a particular interpretation and application of the first amendment does not make it so. Constitutional law is not simple nor obvious.

Es weder vor gericht noch bei Wikileaks je um Codes für Atomwaffen sondern um "ganz normale schwere Kriegsverbrechen", wie z.B. im Collateral Murder Video zu sehen. Und solche Verbrechen müssen bekannt gemacht und verfolgt werden!

Wir begrüßen dieses Urteil! Doch die Anklagen gegen ihn hätten erst gar nicht erhoben werden dürfen. Die Vorwürfe gegen Julian Assange sind klar politisch motiviert. Großbritannien hätte die US-Regierung nicht so bereitwillig bei der unerbittlichen Verfolgung von Assange unterstützen dürfen.
Und obwohl Assange nicht ausgeliefert werden soll, lehnte die Richterin nur zwei Tage später ab, ihn gegen Kaution auf freien Fuß zu setzen. Wir betrachten die fortgesetzte Inhaftierung als willkürlich und fordern die Freilassung von Julian Assange.
Die US-Regierung verlangt die Auslieferung des Australiers wegen Spionagevorwürfen. Assange hatte Dokumente auf WikiLeaks enthüllt. Diese zeigen unter anderem mögliche Kriegsverbrechen des US-Militärs in Afghanistan und im Irak.
Derartige Informationen zu veröffentlichen, ist ein Grundelement der Pressefreiheit. Wer solche Informationen enthüllt, darf nicht verfolgt werden. Im Gegenteil: Diese mutigen Menschen müssen geschützt werden!
Die US-Regierung muss jetzt endlich die Verfolgung von Julian Assange beenden.
