US-Taliban treaty for "less violence" in AfghanistanToday is a leap day, such an opportunity is only given every 4 years. That is why today, in Qatar's capital Doha, US Foreign Minister Pompejo and the Taliban will sign an agreement - let's say - to contain the war in Afghanistan. Before 2 excuses: 1. we had no picture from Afghanistan and had to resort to the one from the Libyan war the USA (also called "no-fly zone"). 2. we searched in vain for reports about today in "our media" and now we have to fall back on Al Jazeera, where there were continuous reports about the negotiations of the last half year. For his election victory next November, President Trump needs at least the appearance that he will keep his election promises. One of them is to end the "eternal wars abroad". The agreement with the Taliban, the signing of which failed at short notice in autumn and early December, is now to be signed today. It does not mention women's rights or schooling for all Afghans. But the USA commits itself to reduce its troops to a remaining 8600 soldiers and in return the Taliban will sit down with the Afghan government within 15 days, as well as refrain from major terrorist attacks and offer "international terrorism" no more shelter. This will not be difficult for the Taliban, because major terrorist attacks cost them victims themselves and they also want to drive the IS out of the country. Their only problem is that the Afghan government does not want to negotiate with them or even share power. Of course, negotiation is the only solution for a halfway equal withdrawal of the West from Afghanistan, but the current deal without the involvement of the government and the people cannot succeed - except for the re-election of Trump. PS. How are the Western Allies, including the Federal Republic of Germany, involved in the negotiations and their consequences? Will the "defence of the Federal Republic in the Hindu Kush" then simply be put on file? Or is the whole thing just a showcase for the US election campaign and the "endless war on terror" continues to the delight of the military-industrial complex after November 4th?
