Underlining the human rights implications of using biometricsAls Mitglied der Fundamental Rights Platform (FRA) dokumentiert Aktion Freiheit statt Angst regelmäßig deren Veröffentlichungen, wenn sie unsere Themen betreffen. Dieses Mal geht es un die Nutzung von biometrischen Daten bei Grenzkontrollen der EU und ihre Auswirkungen auf die Grundrechte. Underlining the human rights implications of using biometricsThe agency took part in the ID@Borders and Future of Travel Conference organised by the OSCE and Biometric Institute. It contributed to a session on recommended practices for the responsible use and sharing of biometrics. It highlighted how human rights are affected by the storing and use of biometric data in the EU IT systems for asylum, visa and border management. The principle of purpose limitation and the importance of safeguards to ensure access and use of data in line with this principle were underlined. The contribution drew on FRA’s extensive work in the area of biometric data and EU IT systems, including legal opinions on proposed EU legislation. The event took place from 11 to 12 April in Vienna.
