Statement of unity on the upcoming U.S.-North Korea summit

The ANSWER Coalition is an endorsing organization of this important statement from a wide range of Korean American and other Korean diaspora organizations, which has been endorsed by many U.S. and international organizations and individuals.

Since the historic April 27 summit between the leaders of North and South Korea at Panmunjom, longstanding tensions and war threats on the Korean peninsula have given way to the promise of peace and reconciliation. Soon, another historic summit, between the United States and North Korea, will take place in Singapore. The two parties, which not too long ago were on the brink of war, will finally sit down to discuss a peaceful settlement to the Korean War. All eyes of the world will be on this momentous event, which could determine not only the fate of the Korean peninsula and Northeast Asia but also the prospect of global peace.

We - Korean Americans who have long fought for peace and the self-determined unification of the Korean peninsula, and allies who stand on the side of peace and justice and share a critical stake in the struggle for peace in Korea - wish to make clear our views on the recent inter-Korean summit and the upcoming U.S.-North Korea summit.

Korea soll atomwaffenfrei werden. Das geht nur mit Hilfe des Völkerrechts, damit die Abrüstung unabhängig ist von den Launen Kim Jong Uns und Donald Trumps.
Wie ist das Treffen zu bewerten? Einerseits sind Gespräche natürlich meilenweit besser als die Beleidigungen und Drohungen der Vergangenheit. Vielleicht müssen wir schon froh sein, dass Donald Trump den Atomgipfel nicht nach einer halben Stunde mit einer wütenden Twitter-Nachricht verlassen hat. Andererseits ist das Ergebnis des Gipfels sehr mager. Es ist eine Absichtserklärung und was daraus wird, muss man erst noch sehen.
Wir fordern daher einen konkreten Abrüstungsplan [https://www.icanw.de/neuigkeiten/nach-singapur-gipfel-ican-fordert-abruestungsplan/] auf Grundlage internationaler Verträge. Nur durch die Einbettung in das Völkerrecht kann sichergestellt werden, dass der Abrüstungsprozess nicht von den Launen Donald Trumps oder Kim Jong Uns abhängt und gestoppt wird, falls einer der beiden die Lust verliert. Nord- und Südkorea sollten dem internationalen Atomwaffenverbot beitreten. Dann wäre der Norden verpflichtet, einen Zeitplan für die Vernichtung der Nuklearwaffen vorzulegen und der Süden müsste für den Abzug der US-amerikanischen Atomwaffen-Trägersysteme sorgen. ...
