Retail stores are turning to facial recognition technology and customer tracking tools to fight against shoplifters

When entering a shop a facial recognition camera quickly scans his face and cross references the image with a watch list of known shoplifters from the local police department.

The software FotoSwitch, a program run by the Rotterdam Rihnmond police department, the Netherlands’ Ministry of Security and Justice, and the Dutch Federation of Gold and Silver, aided by Spanish biometrics firm Herta Security ist one example.

The program gave jewellers an opportunity to quickly screen customers before they entered. The door would also stay locked if a person was wearing sunglasses or something obscuring their face.

It is not clear whether this program reduces the amount of shop liftings in a range that it reduces the people allowed to enter the shop and buy something.

Mir geht es in letzter Zeit auch immer öfter so, dass ich beim Lesen von Artikeln hoffe, sie kämen aus dem Postillon. Wenn das so weitergeht, wird man gar keine Satire mehr machen können, weil sich die Realität bereits selbst in extremer Weise karikiert. Ist das eigentlich nur mein ganz persönlicher subjektiver Eindruck oder geht das hier noch mehr Leuten so?

spätestens, wenn man jedem potentiellen Kunden 1 Cent Rabatt auf die Klunker verspricht, wird er sich dafür freiwillig sein edles Antlitz scannen lassen - ja, ich fürchte das ist Realsatire => wohl die Zukunft
