15.05.2010: Google hat "in der Regel nur Bruchstücke von Nutzdaten gesammelt"

Neun Tage bevor die Datenschutzbehörde in Hamburg, überprüfen will welche Daten die Google Street View Autos sammeln und ob  sie dabei auch W-LAN Netze scannen, hat auch Goolge mal nachgeschaut was eigentlich alles gespeichert wird.

"Google hat in der Regel nur Bruchstücke von Nutzdaten gesammelt." meint Alan Eustace, Senior VP, Engineering & Research von Google. Da ihre Autos unterwegs sind, und 5 Mal pro Sekunde der abzuhörende Kanal gewechselt wird können sie keine vollständigen Sessions mitschneiden. Auch werden "keine Informationen über sichere Passwort-geschützte WLAN-Netze" gespeichert. Unklar bleibt, ob hiermit der Inhalt oder auch die SSID und die MAC Adressen gemeint sind.

"Nine days ago the data protection authority (DPA) in Hamburg, Germany asked to audit the WiFi data that our Street View cars collect for use in location-based products like Google Maps for mobile, which enables people to find local restaurants or get directions. His request prompted us to re-examine everything we have been collecting ...

However, we will typically have collected only fragments of payload data because: our cars are on the move; someone would need to be using the network as a car passed by; and our in-car WiFi equipment automatically changes channels roughly five times a second. In addition, we did not collect information traveling over secure, password-protected WiFi network ...

As soon as we became aware of this problem, we grounded our Street View cars and segregated the data on our network, which we then disconnected to make it inaccessible."
