Alternatively, you can use Mozilla Thunderbird + Enigmail. Should make configuring the whole thing a bit easier.

Neither does what I think it needs. Hell, Thunderbird can't even do PGP at all without relying on 3rd-party stuff. C'mon! It's over, and Mozilla Thunderbird is one of the primary reasons, why PGP failed to gain any kind of user acceptance!

Because Thunderbird's developers had the opportunity to make PGP work for the masses. Built-in, out-of-the-box. Seemless and opportunistic. Like HTTPS-Everywhere (thanks, EFF!). But they chose not to and still don't. With obvious results!

There are a few. Though all of them implement it in the same non-functioning manner...non-opportunistic, key exchange a major hassle (what should be done automatically by the mail client), reliance on overrated key servers, reliance on over-rated Web-of-Trust. What's so bad about an optional 3rd-party plugin to provide privacy? It's like a car with optional 3rd-party seat belts, that you need to get from elsewhere and install yourself!

Well, if you say that Thunderbird does not provide encryption (I suppose that's what you mean by privacy here) out-of-the-box, you're definitely wrong. Even though it's not PGP, IIRC Thunderbird can encrypt and sign messages with regular certificates as well. Though getting the certificate to the right people would also be quite tedious.

For encryption to be ubiquitous it has to be the default, not noticeable by the user and can't be turned off. And well, this will never happen with PGP
